Dublin pub that claims to be Ireland’s oldest basically just lying

A Dublin pub that claims to be the oldest pub in Ireland is basically just lying and has the giant big lie printed in giant big letters on its outside front wall for all to see.

The Brazen Head on Dublin’s Lower Bridge Street has been in operation since the year 1198.

However, Ireland’s oldest pub, Sean’s Bar in Athlone, has been serving customers since 900 AD, almost 300 years before the Brazen Head existed.

Not only that, the Guinness Book of World Records has certified Sean’s Bar as the oldest pub in Ireland, Europe and possibly the World.

We asked the Brazen Head manager Anthony Heffernan why they claim to be Ireland’s oldest pub when they’re clearly not.

“Well the way we see it, we’re Dublin’s oldest pub so therefore we can call ourselves Ireland’s oldest pub because nobody cares about what happens down the country. They don’t count. I mean seriously, who in their right mind would ever go to Athlone? I’ve barely even heard of it.”

Padraig O’Shea is manager of Sean’s Bar in Athlone and he told us he’s not surprised with the attitude of those at the Brazen Head.

“Well they are west-brits after all so it’s hardy surprising that they like to claim things that aren’t theirs. Call them what you want. Jackeens, union jackeens, gobshites, it doesn’t really matter. I just think we should look into the possibility of separating Dublin from the rest of Ireland, floating it across the Irish sea and planting it where it belongs. Halfway between Liverpool and Manchester. I’m sure they’d feel right at home over there.”

So there you have it folks. Will the debate over which pub is Ireland’s oldest continue for years to come? No. Of course not. There’s no debate. It’s Sean’s Bar in Athlone. Just look it up if you don’t believe us.

Next week, we claim to be Ireland’s biggest satire site with over 46,000 followers even though Waterford Whispers has 670,000. Stay tuned.
