Weather alert upgraded to status red as Storm Ashley approaches
A status red weather warning has been issued for the entire country for tomorrow as Storm Ashley approaches.
This is the first time a hurricane has been named after a Coronation Street character since Storm Betty wreacked havoc in 1995.
RTE had asked Met Eireann to consider naming storms after characters from Fair City but they refused, saying they didn’t want to be associated with the Dublin based soap because it’s shite.
Met Eireann began naming storms after TV show characters in 1984 when 40 people were blown off the Cliffs of Moher into the Atlantic during Hurricane Miley, named after popular Glenroe character Miley Byrne.
25 of them were rescued by the NYPD after they washed up on the beach in Coney Island in New York.
Sadly the other 15 were eaten by Fungi the dolphin.
