Leitrim celebrates first ever mention on the news as tornado makes headlines

County Leitrim is celebrating today after it was mentioned on the news not only at home but also in the UK for the first time ever due to yesterday’s tornado.

Councillor Barney Fitzmaurice said it’s a proud day for the county and it shows there are plenty of interesting and newsworthy things happening in Leitrim that are ignored too often.

“It’s not every day you’re sitting at home watching Sky News and you hear the word Leitrim mentioned but it happened last night and I must admit my eyes welled up with tears of pride and joy. This is the biggest thing to happen to Leitrim since our under 12 camogie team reached the Connaught quarter-final in 1984.”

High winds tore through Leitrim village at around 12:30pm yesterday, leaving cars, buildings, boats, and trees badly damaged but councillor Fitzmaurice said the main thing is Leitrim got mentioned on the news.

“I didn’t hear Sligo getting a mention. Not a word about Roscommon either. Jealous much? You can keep your Benbulben and your Chris O’Dowd. It’s Leitrim they’re all talking about because this is where it’s happening. We’ve been ignored long enough and now is our time to shine. This makes up for the damage caused by the tornado. Nobody here gives a shite about that anymore. This has finally put us on the map alongside New York, Paris and all the rest of them. Up Leitrim!”
