Spanish government hands sovereignty of Lanzarote over to Ireland
The Spanish government has officially handed sovereignty of Lanzarote over to Ireland.
Ireland’s favourite Canary Island has seen a steady rise in the amount of Irish visitors over the last 10 years and figures show that this year alone, 8 million Irish people visited Lanzarote with 2 million of those deciding to stay there forever.
Puerto del Carmen is Lanzarote’s biggest tourist spot and each year there seems to be more and more Irish bars opening along the prom. From one end of the strip to the other it’s non-stop tricolours with many predicting that within a couple of years, every bar and restaurant in the town will be Irish. Apart from Bluebells obviously.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said it’s time to concede that Lanzarote is now Irish.
“I was there last week and I might as well have been somewhere in Connemara. It’s a full scale invasion of freckly sunburnt people in GAA tops. They have taken over and it’s time to admit there’s absolutely nothing we can do to stop it.”
The first ever Irish governor of Lanzarote will be sworn in at a lavish ceremony later this month and currently the bookies favourite to land the role is Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch.
