Protest in Dublin against capture of Venezuelan President as Venezuelans in Dublin celebrate capture of President
By Paul McRingo Political Correspondent
Around a hundred protesters took part in a demonstration in Dublin against US actions to oust the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro.
The protesters included People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy and various other far-left representatives.
Mr Murphy described the US as a “terrorist state” and said “we should not be facilitating its terrorist activities around the world. Death to America! Free Palestine!”
What the group did not include however was Venezuelans, who were busy celebrating and dancing in the streets at the capture of Maduro.
We spoke to Maria Fernandez, a human rights campaigner who has been living in Lucan since 2015 having fled Venezuela with her parents when she was just 13 years-old.
“This is the greatest day of our lives.” she told us. “Thousands of people were murdered by Maduro’s security forces during street protests. Political opponents were regularly tortured and often disappeared forever. Eight million Venezuelans fled the country during his reign of terror. This is a day we thought we might never see. We are overcome with joy.”
We asked Maria what she thinks about the Irish people protesting against the ousting of Maduro.
She told us “I think they’re clueless cunts.”
Fair enough. Can’t argue with that.
