Government worried that the government is being led by a pair of clowns
By Paul McRingo Political Correspondent
As the fallout from the farcical Irish Presidential election continues, government ministers in both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are openly questioning whether their party leaders should be allowed to remain in their positions.
Micheál Martin continues to face questions about his leadership of Fianna Fáil over his role in selecting Jim Gavin (Lol) as the party’s candidate for the election. Gavin pulled out of the race after a couple of weeks.
Fine Gael TD Sean Kelly said he was “shafted” in their process to pick a presidential candidate. Heather Humphreys was selected instead and went on to secure less than half the vote of the eventual winner, far-left Independent candidate Catherine Connolly.
In several constituencies Humphreys somehow managed to finish third in a two horse race, behind Connolly and spoiled votes.
As for Catherine Connolly, she was elected President of Ireland with the support of less than a quarter of the electorate in the lowest ever turn out for an election in the history of the state.
She will now disappear up her own Áras and not be seen again for the next seven years apart from when attending Ireland matches. Irish democracy, the envy of the world.
