American pop superstars Jay Z and his wife Beyonce have landed in Ireland ahead of next week’s Ploughing Championships which get under way on Tuesday in County Offaly. The couple are huge fans of the annual shindig with Beyonce in particular having a keen interest in agricultural machinery.
They spoke to reporters as they walked through Knock Airport before jumping into a limousine which was waiting to take them to Tullamore where they are expected to stay at the plush Central Hotel on Main Street for the next week. Jay Z revealed that it’s not just the Ploughing that attracts them to Ireland.
“Yo, where the Tayto at?” the rap star asked, clearly referring to the popular Irish crisp. “Ten hours on a mother f***in’ plane dreaming about cheese and onion Tayto and a big ass glass of red lemonade. I love that shit. Tell ’em B.” he said to his wife, probably referring to the first letter of her name rather than the word bitch.
“He really does.” said Beyonce who told reporters she can’t wait for Tuesday’s opening of the 2018 National Ploughing Championships.
“It’s the highlight of our year. We may live in sunny LA but not a day goes by that we’re not dreaming of Offaly in September. It’s such a magical place. I just hope we get to meet Marty Morrissey.”
Legendary chairperson of the National Ploughing Association 83 year-old Anna May McHugh – known as the Queen of the Ploughing – admits that she’s not familiar with the American couple’s work but said she intends to have a listen to their records over the weekend.
“I’ve never heard of Jay Zed or Beyonce but I’m told they’re the Daniel and Majella of America so maybe they’ll give us an auld song while they’re here.”
Meanwhile bookies Paddy Power have slashed the odds on this year’s Christmas number one being a Jay Z & Beyonce cover version of The Offaly Rover.
